I was relieved today by Grandma Bonnie, then Jeff, for a few evening hours. I was able to surprise Gina by picking her up at school. Poor thing, yesterday morning I put her on the bus and all was normal. I was actually having visions of pretending I am a stay-at-home mom. I put dinner in the crock pot, started the laundry, etc....then, Joey woke up on fire. And, all was normal--for our family, anyway. The procedure is as in the past. They will take blood cultures each day from Joey and grow them on a slide to identify any specific infection. In the interim, they give him "blanket" antibiotics that cover a range of possible infections. If a specific strain is identified, they can then target the infection with a more specific antibiotic. Joey did have a positive culture from Monday's blood draw. He has a staff infection in his port. He got as high as 104 last night. But, I remained strangely calm. When you have been to Hell and back, a little fever doesn't seem so monumental. His fever broke this morning around 4 am. He was playing video games when I left this afternoon and telling jokes to the nursing staff. He is in a great mood. I was trying to be up about it for him yesterday, but I think he could sense my discouraged attitude. He said, "Mom, this hospital will be fine! We can play, and you don't have to do any jobs, it will be fun!" Once again, he brings me up. We are optimistic about getting out Saturday. If the fever stays away and his cultures turn negative for the next few days, Saturday could be reasonable. He will also most likely make it to his Friday planning session for radiation. I don't have a computer at the hospital this time---tried to keep my packing to a minimum so I can believe it is short term. Love you all.
